Kirtan Hummelen is an award winning cinematographer from the Netherlands based in Shanghai. With a rich background in both narrative and commercial projects he combines storytelling and technical expertise to engage diverse audiences. He strives to harmonize light, color, composition and movement. Whether it’s a feature film, documentary or commercial Kirtan approaches each project with curiosity, tailoring his tools and techniques to best serve the story.
His first feature film, Elevator, was an official selection at the 2020 Shanghai International Film Festival, and his debut documentary feature, May, won a Golden Goblet Award for Asian New Talent at the 2023 Shanghai International Film Festival.

他的首部电影长片《幸运电梯》入围了2020年上海国际电影节的“华语新风”单元,而他的另一部电影《梅的白天和黑夜》在2023年上海国际电影节上荣获了亚洲新人奖的金爵奖。
A deep love for photography and films sparked his curiosity in visual storytelling. After a documentary internship and an Erasmus exchange to a Finnish Film Academy he graduated in 2009. He then spent the next five years gaining hands-on experience in the lighting department, deepening his understanding of the crucial role light plays in cinematography.
Collaborating with video artists on experimental films allowed Kirtan to explore visual concepts from a range of perspectives. His curiosity and passion for exploration, shaped by travel and varied experiences enable him to bring fresh ideas to every project. By applying his creative personality and industry experience he has shot a wide variety of commercials, music videos, documentaries, shorts and feature films earning multiple awards along the way.

25th Shanghai International Film Festival - Asian New Talent Award for Best Director (Winner) and Asian New Talent Award for Best Film (Nominated). This feature length documentary directed by Luo Dong, tells the story of Yumei, a Shanghai aunt in her seventies, who crosses half of Shanghai every day, searching for love and a dance partner.
The film is produced by Zhou Xun and through Yumei’s experiences, depicts the hardships and persistence that elderly people face in their search for love and stability. Despite having gone through two failed marriages, Yumei still believes in love. Every day, she rushes along the elevated highways, looking for someone who might accompany her for the rest of her life.
《梅的白天和黑夜》是由罗冬执导的电影,讲述了年过七旬的上海阿姨玉梅每天穿越大半个上海,寻找爱情和舞伴的故事。这部电影由周迅监制,影片通过玉梅的经历,展现了老年人在寻找爱情和定居过程中的艰辛与坚持。玉梅虽然经历了两次失败的婚姻,但她依然对爱情抱有信念,每天在高架上飞驰,寻找某个可能陪伴她余生的舞伴。电影通过玉梅的故事,呈现了上海老年人的生活状态和情感追求,尤其是对爱情的渴望。影片全程使用沪语对白,非职业演员出演,关注本土爷叔阿姨的老年生活状态,尤其是婚恋问题。
《梅的白天和黑夜》在第25届上海国际电影节金爵奖亚洲新人单元中获得了最佳导演奖,展现了老年人在现代都市生活中的独特视角和情感体验。
